Bogart Font

In 2020, Florence Canovaro created the Bogart font as a tribute to traditional low-contrast old-style fat font faces, which he designed with heartfelt emotions. The bold charm which defined mid-century visual culture exists in Bogart through its inspiration from Cooper Black (Oswald Bruce Cooper, 1922) and Goudy Heavy Face (Frederic W. Goudy and Sol Hess, 1925-1932). The curved expressive shapes became legendary during the 1960s and 1970s because designers used rub-on transfers extensively and phototypesetting systems widely. Their cheerful disposition along with a carefree spirit led them to incorporate lengthy decorative components which connected lettering to typography.

The historical process of evaluating expressive typefaces led Canovaro to include traits from Windsor – an idiosyncratic American old-style typeface. Bogart extends the versatility of Windsor by taking its slanted curves and unorthodox designs to create display weights which use graceful teardrop terminals to enhance the balance between light and heavy forms. Bogart contains nine weights with matching true italics which offer a full character set of over 1,600 glyphs that enable both Latin and Cyrillic and Greek alphabets across 219 languages.

Canovaro introduced Bogart Alternate as a text-oriented extension of Bogart, which provides nine additional weights for accessible usage. The alternate set of Bogart maintains its traditional elegance from old-style heritage for achieving clear readability across editorial and mid-weight usage.

Bogart draws its inspiration from classic film noir charm while incorporating retro design elements as a tribute to legendary actor Humphrey Bogart. A wink at the actor’s famous statement about life’s impossibility of embarrassing situations gives Bogart’s design its unique flair as it transforms flawed antique typefaces into contemporary specimens. The typeface achieves excellent results as an editorial tool and stands out in display needs and packaging projects because it maintains clear text alongside distinctive visual elements.
