FF Real was created by Erik Spiekermann together with Ralph Olivier du Carrois and Anja Meiners. The design revisits early German grotesques from the turn of the 20th century, but it’s not a direct copy — it introduces a warmer, more approachable tone and stronger readability. You can see echoes of Berlin’s Theinhardt and Berthold AG foundries, but the shapes feel less mechanical and more refined for digital use.
The first version of FF Real appeared in 2014 for Spiekermann’s biography, Hello I am Erik, later expanding into two full families: FF Real Text and FF Real Head. Both now include 65 weights, with oblique and condensed options added in recent updates. The text styles carry thoughtful tweaks like wider ‘f’ and ‘t’, round punctuation, and open counters, while the headline cuts keep a crisp graphic look for posters and branding.
