Goldenbook font by Mark Simonson and Mark Simonson Studio is a typeface that reflects the warmth of mid-century book covers, advertising and packaging. It is a highly adaptive serif font with a vintage design and a playful, somewhat handmade look which will take you back to the times when children’s books and advertising posters were crafted by hand.
Goldenbook is based on the lettering used in the 50s and 60s especially the work of the commercial artists who used rather gentle and friendly look of the handwritten fonts. Simonson’s design evokes this period, which recreates the feeling of the several graphic design of that period which was warm and friendly. The font is somewhat friendly and unfortunately that is because it resembles a personal or handwritten font, useful for projects that need a touch of nostalgia or friendliness.
It has a gracious aspect and is friendly due to its round shapes of the serifs and also due to the quite low contrast of the stroke. It possesses an upright construction and strongly rounded shapes of the letters not interfering with the readability but adding warmth to the composition. The lower case characters appear more light hearted, the upper case has a robust feel but is not at all aggressive in its presentation.
Goldenbook Font Family
Goldenbook comes in a pretty narrow range of weights, from light to bold, all of which are slightly rounded at the edges and therefore relatively informal. The different weights afford versatility, thus it is a suitable choice for display purposes as well as text purposes. It fits great for headlines, logos, labels, and even big chunks of texts when you want to give them a more friendly look. The light weights can give a feeling of retro style, while the weights are strong enough to be used in display designs.
This is complemented by the OpenType features of Goldenbook which offers the user alternate characters, ligatures and discretionary ligatures to choose from. These features allow designers to create more interesting and diverse arrangement of letters, giving the face a more hand crafted look. Simonson pay much attention to each character of the typeface and makes every character look very realistic which gives the typeface a historical feel.
