Gotham is a sans serif font designed by Tobias Frere, a famous American Type Designer who worked in New York in 2000. The design takes its inspiration from the lettering seen in older buildings in New York City, especially the sign on the 8th Avenue Facade of the Port Authority Bus Terminal. It came out of a commission from GQ Magazine, which was looking for a geometric and masculine font.
It has a relatively broad design with a reasonably high x-height and wide apertures. Another feature to use is that it increases readability and legibility. It is best used for headings but not for long paragraphs. Gotham font family comes in 8 different font weights, from thin to bold and black. Each font also comes with its italics.
Gotham in Use
If we talk about its usage in the modern world, you would be amazed to know that many international brands use it as their primary font. You still miss watching cartoons on Cartoon Network. Well, the logo you used to see every time you turned your TV on uses Gotham in their branding. Another famous app that everyone has in their phones today is Spotify which also use it in their logo.
